Bangladesh High Court Reviews Election Challenges

Date:

Maulana Mamunul Haque, the leader of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis and a candidate of the Jamaat-led alliance from Dhaka-13 constituency, has submitted a legal challenge to the High Court regarding the outcome of the 13th parliamentary election. In this electoral district, Bobby Hajjaj, a candidate of BNP, was announced as the winner.

The High Court has scheduled a session later today to review the petition, with Justice Md Zakir Hossain presiding over a single-judge bench. As per the Election Commission’s official announcement, Bobby, running under the “sheaf of paddy” symbol, garnered 90,601 votes in Dhaka-13, surpassing Mamunul’s 86,889 votes by a margin of 2,200.

Prior to this case, over 20 candidates had already lodged petitions with the High Court disputing the election outcomes in various constituencies. The High Court has accepted these petitions for review and has instructed the Election Commission to safeguard the ballots and other essential election materials linked to the respective constituencies.
