“Bangladesh Shifts Focus: Embracing Economic Diplomacy for Growth”

Date:

Bangladesh has historically engaged with the world using traditional diplomatic approaches, focusing on political ties, development partnerships, and multilateral relations. While this strategy has brought in aid, goodwill, and key friendships when needed, the evolving global landscape demands a shift towards economic diplomacy as the primary driver of national development. As Bangladesh approaches potential graduation from Least Developed Country status by 2029, the competition for capital intensifies amid geopolitical complexities and rapid technological advancements.

In today’s world, successful nations are those adept at leveraging diplomatic ties for economic gains such as trade agreements, investments, and technology transfers. It is crucial for Bangladesh to align its diplomatic efforts with economic outcomes rather than mere symbolic gestures. Embassies are now expected to play a proactive role in identifying investment opportunities, promoting exports, and fostering innovation partnerships, beyond conventional political representation.

While branding Bangladesh as a stable and business-friendly destination is a positive step, attracting foreign investments requires more than just a good reputation. Investors now compare Bangladesh not only with neighboring countries but also with global competitors in terms of ease of doing business, policy stability, and visible reforms. Economic diplomacy must extend beyond ceremonial activities to actively support Bangladeshi businesses abroad and attract foreign investments.

For economic diplomacy to be effective, domestic reforms are essential to eliminate obstacles that deter investors. Initiatives aimed at deregulation, private-sector-led growth, and improved governance are crucial in building confidence among investors. As Bangladesh transitions from Least Developed Country status, the focus shifts to negotiating bilateral agreements, exploring new markets, and embracing technological advancements to sustain growth and competitiveness.

In the digital age, innovation and technology play a pivotal role in national competitiveness. Bangladesh must diversify its economic landscape beyond traditional sectors like garments and remittances to include digital services, AI cooperation, research partnerships, and talent mobility. Embracing innovation and intellectual capital through economic diplomacy will be key to unlocking new sources of growth and staying relevant in the global economy.

To strengthen economic diplomacy, Bangladesh should establish dedicated desks for AI and New Economy within key diplomatic missions to actively pursue technology partnerships and digital trade opportunities. Implementing an economic dashboard for foreign missions to track goals, investment opportunities, and outcomes can enhance transparency and accountability in diplomatic efforts. By strategically aligning economic diplomacy with national priorities and fostering supportive environments, Bangladesh can effectively harness its advantages to drive sustainable economic growth.
