“Crisis in Cuba Deepens as US Blockade Cuts Off Oil Supply”

Date:

The crisis in Cuba is causing great concern, according to the United Nations. The nation is facing challenges due to a halt in oil deliveries, which is essentially a result of the US imposing a blockade. President Donald Trump has declared intentions to cut off Cuba’s oil supply following the removal of Nicolas Maduro, Venezuela’s leader and Cuba’s primary oil provider.

The UN’s human rights office spokesperson, Marta Hurtado, expressed deep worries over Cuba’s worsening socio-economic situation. She highlighted the prolonged financial and trade embargo, adverse weather conditions, and recent US actions limiting oil transports as factors exacerbating the crisis. The impact on the human rights of Cuban citizens is becoming increasingly severe.

Volker Turk, the UN rights chief, reiterated the call for all countries to lift unilateral sectoral measures due to their wide-ranging and indiscriminate effects on the population. Hurtado emphasized the critical role of imported fossil fuels in sustaining essential services like healthcare, food, and water systems in Cuba. The scarcity of oil in the country is jeopardizing the availability of these vital services, with more than 80% of water pumping equipment relying on electricity.

The spokesperson also noted that both Trump and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio have openly expressed their ambitions to bring about a change in leadership in Havana. This situation is putting immense pressure on Cuba’s infrastructure and essential services, further adding to the challenges faced by its people.
