Approximately 30 Democratic lawmakers opted to skip President Donald Trump’s congressional address in favor of attending a gathering called the “People’s State of the Union.” Senator Chris Murphy addressed a crowd in front of the US Capitol, stating that the President disrespects the institution and does not merit an audience. Meanwhile, President Trump, in his second term, delivered his annual State of the Union speech to Congress, defending his administration’s achievements and outlining future priorities.
At the alternative event on the National Mall, speakers, including individuals negatively impacted by the President’s policies, such as an alleged victim of sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and families affected by deportations, shared their stories. Attendees displayed signs advocating for the protection of democracy and criticizing funding for ICE, the federal immigration enforcement agency.
Simultaneously, another gathering called “State of the Swamp” was planned, which was expected to feature celebrities and various Democratic officials.
