Cuban authorities have reported that four exiles were killed and six others injured after entering Cuban waters on a speedboat registered in Florida. The incident occurred when the group opened fire on a Cuban patrol, as tensions between Cuba and the United States remain high.
The Interior Ministry of Cuba stated that the individuals were anti-government Cubans, some of whom were previously sought for planning attacks. They arrived from the US dressed in camouflage and were armed with assault rifles, handguns, homemade explosives, ballistic vests, and telescopic sights.
A Cuban suspect was also apprehended within Cuban territory in connection with the alleged plot, according to the official statement released by the ministry.
The Interior Ministry reported, “According to preliminary statements from the detainees, they intended to carry out an infiltration for terrorist purposes.”
The wounded individuals were promptly evacuated for medical treatment, including the Cuban patrol commander who was also injured, as mentioned by the ministry.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio clarified that the operation was not conducted by the US government and no US personnel were involved in the incident.
While Cuban authorities have informed the US about the situation, Rubio stated that the US embassy in Havana would conduct an independent verification of the events.
