A female teacher at Daokandi Government College in Durgapur upazila of Rajshahi was reportedly assaulted by a group of local BNP leaders and activists during an examination on Thursday (April 23, 2026). The incident took place at noon while second-year degree exams were ongoing, with Section 144 in effect within a 100-yard radius of the exam center and police presence since the morning.
A video circulating on social media captured Shahadat Ali, a former general secretary of Joynagar union Jubo Dal, striking teacher Aleya Khatun Hira with a shoe inside a campus room. Sources from the college identified the alleged assailants as local BNP leaders Akbar Ali, Afaz Ali, and Shahadat Ali.
Reports from the college indicate that a group of seven to eight men entered the principal’s office around noon, allegedly demanding donations for a local event and financial records from the previous principal’s tenure. Aleya started recording the incident on her phone, which led to Shahadat attempting to stop her, resulting in a confrontation where she slapped him, and Shahadat retaliated by hitting her with a shoe.
Following this altercation, the teacher reportedly confronted Afaz Ali, the senior vice-president of ward 2 BNP, on the campus, as shown in another video where she is seen physically engaging with a man on the college field. Subsequently, BNP leaders and activists allegedly assaulted Principal Abdur Razzak and several other teachers, causing damage to office rooms.
At least five individuals, including Principal Abdur Razzak, Aleya, and Prof Rezaul Karim Alam, sustained injuries during the incident. Aleya claimed that the group had been pressuring her for financial records as part of extortion attempts, stating that the attack was in response to her support of the principal’s stance against this demand.
Shahadat, who was prominently featured in the viral video, could not be reached for comment. Akbar Ali, the vice-president of Joynagar union BNP, refuted the allegations, asserting that they were seeking accountability for alleged irregularities and corruption. He claimed that Aleya initiated the violence, leading to the escalation of the situation.
In response to the incident, Akbar was removed from all party positions and primary membership for actions deemed contrary to party discipline and principles. A press release issued by BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi confirmed this decision.
Principal Razzak mentioned that BNP groups had been pressuring him for money since he assumed his role at the college four months ago, and tensions escalated after he resisted their demands. Rafiqul Islam, the investigation officer of Durgapur Police Station, stated that the police were present to prevent unrest and tried to mediate between the parties. However, individuals forcibly entered the premises and carried out the assault and vandalism, with no formal complaint lodged as of yet.
