Actor Eric Dane, known for his portrayal of Dr. Mark Sloan, also referred to as ‘McSteamy,’ on the popular medical series “Grey’s Anatomy,” has passed away at 53 years old. His family confirmed this sad news to People magazine recently.
Last year, Dane publicly disclosed his diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurodegenerative illness commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
In an official statement, his family expressed deep sorrow over Eric Dane’s passing after a courageous battle with ALS. Throughout his illness, Dane remained a committed advocate for raising awareness and supporting research to assist others facing similar conditions. His family requested privacy during this challenging time.
While gaining fame as a heartthrob on “Grey’s Anatomy,” Dane had a diverse career in both television and film. He began his television journey in a 1991 episode of “Saved by the Bell” and went on to feature in popular shows like “The Wonder Years,” “Married… with Children,” and “Roseanne.” His notable role on “Grey’s Anatomy” spanned from 2006 to 2012, with around 139 episodes.
In recent times, Dane was part of HBO’s drama “Euphoria” and appeared in the one-season Amazon Prime series “Countdown” in the past year. His last credited TV appearance will be in a 2025 episode of NBC’s medical drama “Brilliant Minds,” where he portrayed a character living with ALS.
After his diagnosis, Dane actively supported ALS awareness and research, joining the board of directors of Target ALS, a nonprofit organization focused on accelerating research and increasing awareness of the disease.
Married to actress Rebecca Gayheart since their Las Vegas wedding in 2004, Dane and Gayheart had faced marital challenges but had reconciled before his passing. In his final days, the actor was surrounded by close friends, his devoted wife, and his two cherished daughters, Billie and Georgia.
Eric Dane will be remembered for his contributions to the entertainment industry and his dedication to ALS advocacy and research.
