“Jamaat-e-Islami Leader Warns Against Rising Fascism”

Date:

Jamaat-e-Islami Chief and Opposition Leader Shafiqur Rahman cautioned about the lingering threat of fascism, likening it to a persistent ailment that can spread beyond a single individual’s demise. Addressing a gathering of Dhaka district Jamaat in Keraniganj, Rahman emphasized that fascism is akin to a contagion that can transcend individuals, highlighting the ongoing transmission of such ideologies in society.

He underscored that overlooking, disrespecting, or outright rejecting the public’s mandate signifies the onset of fascism, calling for its eradication from the country. Rahman stressed the necessity for substantial constitutional reforms, advocating for more than superficial amendments that merely patch up existing flaws. Drawing a metaphor between repairing a torn garment and crafting a new one, he expressed the need to discard outdated practices and embrace a fresh approach to governance.

Questioning the proliferation of fascism despite numerous constitutional amendments, Rahman argued for the removal of provisions enabling such ideologies through comprehensive reforms. He criticized the ruling party for prioritizing amendments over substantial reforms and blamed them for the current crisis by failing to initiate the Constitution Reform Council.

Highlighting the government’s failure to convene the reform council and fulfill its obligations, Rahman urged for a resolution within parliament. He lamented the missed opportunity for dialogue within the parliamentary setting and accused the government of pushing the opposition towards street protests.

Rahman urged the youth to reignite their revolutionary spirit and warned of sustained movements until their demands are met, with a readiness to take to the streets if necessary. He clarified his party’s stance on the constitution, emphasizing a call for reform rather than total abolition, countering allegations of advocating for its complete removal.
