JioStar Ends IPL Broadcast Deal in Bangladesh

Date:

Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s entertainment venture JioStar has ended its broadcast agreements in Bangladesh for the Indian Premier League cricket tournament. The decision came after JioStar’s local partner failed to meet payment obligations, as per a document reviewed by Reuters.

In January, Bangladesh prohibited IPL broadcasts due to the exclusion of Bangladeshi player Mustafizur Rahman by Kolkata Knight Riders, following directions from the Indian cricket board. This occurred amidst escalating tensions between the two nations after the tragic killing of a Hindu man in Bangladesh.

While Bangladesh is reassessing the ban and indicated that further actions would depend on the stance of its sports ministry, JioStar’s termination of the agreements means there will be no local broadcaster for the IPL season, regardless of any policy changes.

JioStar officially notified Bangladesh broadcaster TSports on February 17 that the contract was terminated immediately due to the partner’s persistent non-compliance with payment deadlines outlined in the agreement.

The joint venture between Reliance and Walt Disney, JioStar, did not provide responses to Reuters’ inquiries. TSports and the sports and information ministries of Bangladesh also remained silent on requests for comments.

The IPL, valued at $18.5 billion and recognized as the wealthiest cricket league globally, holds immense popularity in Bangladesh, where cricket is a passion akin to the rest of the subcontinent. The latest IPL season commenced on March 28.

India-Bangladesh relations became strained following a political shift in Dhaka in August 2024, disrupting the previously close ties under former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who sought refuge in New Delhi post a major uprising.

However, recent developments suggest a potential improvement in relations as the new government’s Prime Minister, Tarique Rahman, expressed intentions in February to engage with neighboring countries based on mutual respect and shared interests.

Another communication from JioStar dated February 17 revealed the termination of broadcast agreements in Bangladesh for the Women’s Premier League cricket tournament due to similar payment defaults.
