The Kremlin dismissed allegations made by five European countries that the Russian government was responsible for the death of Alexei Navalny, a prominent critic, using poison dart frog toxin two years ago. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that the claims were unsubstantiated and lacked any factual basis. Navalny, a vocal critic of President Vladimir Putin, passed away in February 2024 at the age of 47 in a remote Arctic prison shortly before Putin’s re-election in a heavily criticized vote deemed unfair by Western nations. The European countries, including Britain, France, Germany, Sweden, and the Netherlands, released a joint statement asserting that tests on Navalny’s remains definitively identified the presence of epibatidine, a toxin typically found in poison dart frogs native to South America and not naturally occurring in Russia. Peskov emphasized Moscow’s strong rejection of the accusations, labeling them as biased, unfounded, and completely denied by the Russian government.
