“US Congressman Huizenga Touts Increased Involvement in South Asia”

Date:

US Congressman Bill Huizenga has highlighted the potential for increased American involvement in South Asia amid recent political changes in Nepal and Bangladesh. Speaking at a congressional hearing on US foreign policy in the region, Huizenga, who chairs the South and Central Asia Subcommittee, emphasized the ongoing political transformations in both countries.

Bangladesh is currently conducting its first national election post the 2024 uprising, while Nepal witnessed the overthrow of an authoritarian regime by the youth in September 2025, with democratic elections scheduled for next month.

Huizenga, representing Michigan, underscored the significance of these developments, stating that they present fresh opportunities for US engagement in South Asia and shaping relations with the new administrations in these nations. Characterizing South and Central Asia as dynamic regions, he pointed out the inclination of the youthful and expanding populations towards Western values over China’s “authoritarian” model.

The congressman noted that the region, home to nearly two billion people, features vibrant economies and strategic waterways crucial to the Indo-Pacific power dynamics. He commended President Donald Trump’s efforts in negotiating agreements that facilitate market access and promote US economic interests across the region.

Huizenga expressed concerns about China’s practices, citing its predatory lending tactics to advance security objectives and exert influence over smaller countries, as well as its border fortifications with neighboring nations. He stressed the importance of upholding a free and open Indian Ocean for national security and economic well-being, given its role as a vital global maritime route, handling a significant portion of international oil trade.

Regarding naval cooperation, Huizenga advocated for reinforcing partnerships to safeguard sea lanes, counter China’s expanding influence, and mitigate disruptive actions in the region. He highlighted the strategic significance of the US naval base on Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean, emphasizing its role in deterring coercion, combating piracy, and ensuring unhindered trade flows.

Huizenga also underscored the strategic partnership with India, emphasizing its status as the world’s largest democracy and a rapidly growing economy. He lauded recent trade agreements brokered by President Trump with both India and Bangladesh, particularly highlighting the trade deal with India setting favorable tariff rates and increased American energy exports.

In conclusion, the congressman emphasized the importance of strengthening ties with New Delhi through defense collaborations, trade initiatives, and technological partnerships to advance mutual interests and bolster regional stability.
