Bus services from Cumilla to various districts were disrupted for approximately three and a half hours today following the apprehension of a local BNP leader by the police.
The detained individual, Rezaul Kaiyum, holds the position of president in the Cumilla Adarsha Sadar upazila unit BNP, as confirmed by both law enforcement officials and his supporters.
Although the police detained him for questioning, they did not disclose the specific reasons behind his detainment.
In response to Reazul’s apprehension, his supporters obstructed the movement of buses and local three-wheelers for roughly three and a half hours in the vicinity of the Shashongacha Bus Terminal, according to eyewitnesses.
Touhidul Anwar, the officer-in-charge (OC) of Kotwali Model Police Station, mentioned that Rezaul was taken into custody from his residence around noon and later escorted to the police station for interrogation, but refrained from divulging further details.
According to reports from law enforcement sources, Rezaul’s detention was carried out based on instructions from “higher authorities.”
Following his detainment, Rezaul’s supporters gathered outside both the police station and the Shashongacha Bus Terminal, demanding his immediate release.
The buses originating from this terminal provide services to destinations such as Sylhet, Dhaka, and various upazila headquarters.
The suspension of vehicular movement on these routes caused significant inconvenience to commuters, with many resorting to walking to alternative points from the bus terminal or seeking other modes of transportation to reach their intended locations.
Normal vehicular operations in the area resumed around 4:00 pm, as confirmed by law enforcement authorities and witnesses.
As of the latest report filed at approximately 7:30 pm, Rezaul remained in police custody, with no formal charges filed against him nor any indication of his official arrest, as confirmed by the OC.
