The 13th national election outcomes feature a blend of tight races and comfortable victories across various constituencies. While some candidates dominated their opponents in strongholds, others faced competitive challenges in swing seats that could have gone either way.
BNP candidates established strongholds in the hill districts, with significant margins of victory. For instance, Dipen Dewan in Rangamati garnered over six times more votes than independent Pohel Chakma. In Bandarban, Saching Prue Jerry secured a victory margin of five and a half times over NCP’s Abu Sayeed Md Suja Uddin. Similarly, Abdul Wadud Bhuiyan in Khagrachhari more than doubled the votes of independent Dharma Jyoti Chakma.
Moreover, candidates like Md Harun-Or-Rashid in Rajbari-2 and Md GK Gouse in Habiganj-3 triumphed with over three times the votes of their closest contenders. In other constituencies like Brahmanbaria-6, Ganosamhati Andolon’s Zonayed Saki and Chattogram-7’s Humam Quader Chowdhury secured significant victories as well.
Jamaat candidates also saw success in various constituencies. For instance, in Gaibandha-1, Md Mazedur Rahman received more than three and a half times the votes of BNP’s Khandoker Ziaul Islam Mohammad Ali. Similarly, Muhammad Abdul Khaliq in Satkhira-2 won by a significant margin over BNP’s Md Abdur Rouf.
The competition was fierce in swing seats, with close margins of victory in about 40 battleground constituencies. The BNP and allies narrowly secured victories in 23 seats, while Jamaat-e-Islami and allies clinched wins in 16 seats. Notable close calls included BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman’s slim victory in Dhaka-17 and Jamaat’s Md Rafiqul Islam’s narrow win in Sirajganj-4.
In other races like Rajshahi-1 and Cox’s Bazar-4, candidates won by slim margins, highlighting the intense competition in these constituencies. Overall, the election results showcased a mix of landslide victories and closely contested races across the nation.
