Its primary objective is not only to provide diagnostic services but also to establish itself as Bangladesh’s leading authority for laboratory quality assurance, research, training, and accreditation.
While NILMRC has made significant strides in providing advanced diagnostic services using modern technologies, its full potential remains untapped due to organizational limitations. The institute has not been empowered to fully realize its mandate of developing a national laboratory network, setting up Bangladesh-specific reference values, implementing quality assurance systems, conducting research, and serving as the national reference laboratory for both public and private sectors.
Despite constraints, NILMRC has showcased remarkable technical expertise by conducting a high volume of tests, particularly during the pandemic. It has also contributed to various research endeavors and surveillance programs, highlighting its capability to lead Bangladesh’s laboratory system. However, the institute faces challenges such as inadequate staffing, lack of specialized professionals, and reliance on external funding for quality assurance initiatives.
To address these challenges and enhance its role as a national laboratory reference and accreditation center, NILMRC should be granted greater autonomy and receive sustained government funding. Establishing a dedicated quality assurance and accreditation wing, reforming operational practices, and promoting research and innovation are essential steps towards strengthening Bangladesh’s healthcare system and ensuring reliable laboratory services for all patients.
