North Korea’s ruling Workers’ Party has unanimously re-elected Kim Jong Un as general secretary during a party congress meeting, as reported by state media. This decision is viewed as reinforcing his firm control over power and showcasing increased confidence in domestic stability.
According to a report released on Monday by the KCNA state news agency, Kim was praised for elevating the country’s reputation globally and positioning it strongly to advance its revolutionary goals, while also strengthening the military into a highly skilled and formidable force.
The report highlighted that under Kim’s guidance, the country’s war deterrence capabilities, centered around its nuclear forces, have been significantly enhanced. This positive assessment was shared on the fourth day of the congress’ proceedings.
Experts, such as Lim Eul-chul from Kyungnam University, noted that the reassertion of Kim’s leadership signifies a shift away from crisis management towards a period of confident and stable long-term governance.
In addition to Kim’s re-election, the congress delegates elected members of the party Central Committee and approved revisions to the party’s regulations. Although specific details of the charter changes were not disclosed, it was observed that certain senior officials were excluded from the committee, including former Foreign Minister Ri Su Yong, Supreme People’s Assembly Standing Committee Chairman Choe Ryong Hae, and top party military official Ri Pyong Chol. Analysts suggest this signals a potential shift in leadership dynamics.
Notably, Kim’s daughter, Ju Ae, has not been seen at the conference, fueling speculation that she may be undergoing preparations to eventually succeed her father as the leader. The ongoing ninth party congress, typically held every five years over several days, began last Thursday with 5,000 delegates in attendance. South Korea is closely monitoring the event for insights into new domestic and foreign policy directions.
While substantial policy initiatives have yet to be unveiled, the congress sessions have focused on highlighting the country’s resilience in overcoming economic challenges and the progress achieved under the Party’s governance.
