A drone originating from Russia crashed into a residence in eastern Ukraine, resulting in the tragic deaths of three young children and their father, as per officials’ announcement yesterday. President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the strike, stating it hindered diplomatic efforts while the U.S. pushes for a peace agreement.
The pregnant mother of the children is currently in critical condition with severe burns, confirmed Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko on social media, highlighting the devastating impact of the Russian attack. The incident occurred in the town of Bohodukhiv, located west of Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, late on Tuesday, according to local prosecutors.
The Kharkiv Region Prosecutor’s Office reported that the drone strike completely destroyed the residential building, trapping the family under the debris as flames engulfed the area. The victims, identified by regional governor Oleh Syniehubov, included two 2-year-old boys, a 1-year-old girl, and a 34-year-old man. It was not specified whether the boys were twins, and officials mentioned that the family had recently relocated to the town.
Visuals shared by Ukraine’s emergency service on Telegram depicted firefighters combatting a fire within the house, with smoke billowing through the wooden roof beams. Russia has not issued an immediate response to the incident. Despite denying deliberate targeting of civilians in the ongoing conflict, Russia’s military actions have led to the deaths of numerous civilians since the full-scale invasion in February 2022. Similarly, Ukraine has also struck civilian sites in Russia or Russian-occupied areas within Ukraine, albeit on a smaller scale.
