Sheikh Abdur Rashid Steps Down as Cabinet Secretary

Date:

Cabinet Secretary Sheikh Abdur Rashid, who was serving on a contractual basis, has stepped down from his position. In an interview with The Daily Star last evening, he mentioned that he had notified the government of his intention to resign before the elections, and the resignation has now been formalized.

Although he did not disclose the specific reason for his resignation, the Ministry of Public Administration released a notification yesterday appointing M Siraz Uddin Miah, the principal secretary to the chief adviser, to take on the additional responsibilities of the cabinet secretary. Rashid’s contract was terminated by the ministry prior to this appointment.

As the highest-ranking official in the country, the cabinet secretary plays a crucial role in overseeing the government’s swearing-in process and conducting the oath-taking ceremony for new administrations. His decision to resign just two days before the upcoming government assumes office has surprised many within the administration.

Following Muhammad Yunus’s interim government, Rashid was initially appointed as the secretary of the Secondary and Higher Education Division on a contractual basis. Subsequently, on October 14, 2024, he was appointed as the cabinet secretary on a two-year contract.
