“Special Film Event Celebrates Shaheed Dibosh & Int’l Mother Language Day”

Date:

A special two-day film screening event commemorating Shaheed Dibosh and International Mother Language Day kicks off today at the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) of the University of Dhaka. The event will showcase politically important Bangladeshi films and contemporary documentaries.

Organized by the Dhaka Film Club under the theme “Inspired by the spirit of Ekushey, let the new generation awaken,” the program will take place until February 21 at the road-island premises of the Teacher-Student Centre. Screenings are scheduled daily at 7:00 pm and are open to the public.

The opening night will highlight “Jibon Theke Neya,” a film by renowned director Zahir Raihan, known for its political allegorical content in Bangladeshi cinema. Despite being released before independence, the film’s criticism of authoritarianism and symbolic representation of collective resistance have tied it closely to the Language Movement commemorations.

Additionally, a contemporary documentary will be shown on the first day of the event. On February 21, the organizers will feature “Kalmilata,” directed by Shahidul Haque Khan, along with another contemporary documentary.

Barua Manojit Dhimon, the general secretary of Dhaka Film Club, expressed that the event aims to pay tribute to the language martyrs and introduce significant Bangladeshi films to a broader audience.

This screening initiative focusing on Ekushey is the first of its kind for the organization, receiving institutional support from the Department of Mass Communication under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Bangladesh Film Archive.
