The recently unveiled $1 coin from the United States Mint pays tribute to Steve Jobs, the late co-founder of Apple, representing California in the American Innovation $1 Coin Program. Scheduled for public release on May 12th, this coin is part of a series introduced in 2018 to highlight prominent pioneers and inventions from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the five US territories. Chosen by California Governor Gavin Newsom, Jobs was selected to symbolize the state’s spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship.
Governor Newsom praised Jobs as a symbol of California’s best qualities, stating that his visionary approach and relentless pursuit of the California Dream paved the way for countless American success stories. The coin’s design features a youthful depiction of Jobs against the backdrop of the rolling, oak-covered hills typical of Northern California. Including his name and the phrase “Make Something Wonderful,” inspired by a 2007 Apple meeting where Jobs emphasized the importance of creation and contribution to society, the design was lauded by Mint Director Paul Hollis for commemorating Jobs’s extraordinary legacy and his significant impact on California and the nation.
Available in the US market, collectors can purchase the coins in two options. A roll of 25 coins, minted either in Philadelphia or Denver, is priced at $61.00, while a bag containing 100 coins costs $154.50, equivalent to approximately $1.55 per coin. Each household is limited to acquiring 10 rolls and 10 bags, with a total of 25,950 coins being minted for circulation.
