Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal branches at Dhaka University and Jahangirnagar University staged demonstrations last evening in response to an alleged assault on JCD members by Shibir activists at Chattogram City College.
At Dhaka University, the student organization Chhatra Dal, affiliated with the ruling party, issued a warning that leaders and supporters of Islami Chhatra Shibir would face restrictions on campus if similar clashes like the recent one at Chattogram City College were to occur again.
Multiple individuals sustained injuries in separate altercations between Chhatra Dal and Chhatra Shibir at Chattogram City College on Tuesday.
Following accusations of an armed assault by Shibir on ordinary students, the JCD central committee organized an immediate protest march on the Dhaka University campus at 9:00 pm.
During the demonstration, participants vociferously chanted phrases such as “Jamaat-Shibir, Jamaat-Shibir, secret conspirators” and “Break and crush the dens of Jamaat-Shibir.”
The march concluded with a gathering at the base of the Raju Memorial Sculpture.
Speaking at the event, JCD Central General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir stated, “If you attempt to replicate such assaults on any Bangladesh campus… If you have the audacity to do so… Not a single JCD member will allow your free movement on campuses.”
He alleged that since August 5, Shibir activists have assaulted JCD leaders and supporters multiple times in Chattogram. “They engage in deceitful and aggressive politics.”
“We will resist violent politics alongside ordinary students,” he added.
Nasir also criticized Shibir’s historical political actions and questioned the stance of Jamaat leaders in light of recent political developments.
JCD Dhaka University unit President Ganesh Chandra Roy Sahos claimed that Islami Chhatra Shibir is fabricating a “negative narrative” and inciting unrest on campuses.
“This is not the government of Dr. Muhammad Yunus; this is the government of Tarique Rahman, the statesman who devised the 31-point agenda,” he remarked.
The JCD unit at Jahangirnagar University organized a protest march on campus at 10:00 pm on Tuesday from Rabindranath Tagore Hall, parading through key campus routes before concluding with a brief rally in front of Shaheed Salam Barkat Hall.
Approximately 150 leaders and activists participated in the event.
During the march, participants chanted slogans such as “Zia’s soldiers, unite…Unite…”, “There will be no place for clandestine politics in this country,” and “Break and crush the evil practices of Shibir criminals.”
Present at the rally were JU JCD Convener Jahir Uddin Mohammad Babor, Member Secretary Wasim Ahmed Anik, and other leaders and activists.
Addressing the audience, Babor emphasized, “Since the mass uprising on August 5, we have been tirelessly working to promote tolerant and student-friendly politics on campus. However, our patience should not be mistaken for weakness. The brutal attack by Chhatra Shibir at [Chattogram] City College today is highly reprehensible.”
He cautioned that unless Islami Chhatra Shibir abandons “covert and aggressive politics,” JCD would initiate a robust movement with ordinary students.
“Any effort to disrupt the campus will be met with strong resistance,” he concluded.
