The Water Development Board (WDB) in Sunamganj has issued a plea to farmers to expedite the harvesting of their Boro paddy crop in anticipation of an early flood threat.
In an official notification signed by Md Mamun Howlader, the executive engineer of the district WDB, farmers were alerted to the heightened risk of flooding based on recent data from the Bangladesh Meteorological Department and the WDB. The data indicates a rise in rainfall levels in the upstream catchment areas of rivers flowing through Sunamganj, notably the Surma, Kushiyara, and Baulai rivers.
The notice highlighted the swift increase in river water levels, with forecasts suggesting further escalation in the coming days, elevating the likelihood of an early flood occurrence. Additionally, concerns were raised about potential waterlogging in low-lying areas within the haor region due to the continuous precipitation.
Given the circumstances, farmers were strongly advised to promptly harvest ripe paddy from fields where approximately 80 percent of the crop has matured. Storing the harvested crop in a secure location was emphasized as a measure to mitigate potential losses. The WDB emphasized that timely harvesting could substantially minimize the impact of potential flooding on the crops.
