TIB Director Criticizes ACC Resignations

Date:

Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) Executive Director Dr. Iftekharuzzaman has expressed disappointment over the recent resignations of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) chairman and two commissioners.

Dr. Iftekharuzzaman criticized the resignations, stating that they reflect a longstanding political and governance culture in the country. He emphasized that the ruling authorities often aim to control crucial state oversight institutions by appointing individuals of their preference.

He highlighted that it is common for institutions like the ACC to operate under partisan and bureaucratic influences, noting that these practices are not new or limited to specific incidents.

Dr. Iftekharuzzaman pointed out that decision-makers, focused on short-term gains, often overlook the long-term consequences of weakening institutions.

Despite previous promises made in election manifestos to ensure the independence and effectiveness of such bodies, Dr. Iftekharuzzaman questioned the future of these commitments, particularly regarding the appointment processes for the successors and the government’s stance on combating corruption.

The ACC chairman and two commissioners resigned earlier today following indications that the government was unlikely to continue with the current commission.
