President Donald Trump refuted claims on Monday that the top US military official had raised concerns about the potential risks of a significant operation against Iran, asserting that the US would easily emerge victorious in any conflict with Tehran.
Reports from US media alleged that General Dan Caine, chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, had cautioned about the various dangers linked to strikes on Iran, including the possibility of prolonged involvement.
However, Trump stated on his Truth Social platform that it was entirely inaccurate to suggest that Caine was opposed to engaging in a war with Iran. Trump emphasized that while General Caine, like everyone, preferred to avoid conflict, he believed that any military action against Iran could be swiftly successful.
Addressing speculations, Trump emphasized that Caine had not expressed any reservations about taking action against Iran and was focused on achieving victory if tasked with leading military operations.
According to The Washington Post, Caine had expressed worries at both the White House and the Pentagon regarding potential shortages of munitions and a lack of support from allies, which could elevate risks for US personnel.
Additionally, The Wall Street Journal reported that General Caine and other Pentagon officials had cautioned about potential dangers, including US and allied casualties, as well as the risk of depleting US air defenses in the event of strikes on Iran.
Meanwhile, Axios highlighted Caine’s concern about the United States getting entangled in a prolonged conflict, with Trump’s advisors, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, encouraging a diplomatic approach over immediate military action.
Despite media reports, Trump denounced the alleged inaccuracies in reporting and reiterated his commitment to diplomacy as the primary approach in dealing with Iran, with the readiness to resort to lethal force if needed, as stated by his spokeswoman.
The US has bolstered its military presence in the Middle East significantly, dispatching two aircraft carriers, numerous ships, warplanes, and other assets to the region. The USS Gerald R Ford, the largest aircraft carrier globally, has arrived at the US naval base of Souda Bay on Crete en route to joining the substantial military buildup in the Middle East.
On the Iranian side, the Revolutionary Guards conducted military exercises on the country’s southern coast, as reported by state TV. Additionally, Iran’s government spokesperson emphasized the right of students to protest while cautioning them to respect certain boundaries, following recent anti-government demonstrations on university campuses.
The spokesperson highlighted the importance of protecting sacred symbols and national flags, urging students to avoid crossing these boundaries even during moments of intense emotion. Acknowledging the grievances of students, she emphasized understanding while also emphasizing the need for restraint.
In a separate incident, an Iranian Army helicopter crashed into a fruit market in the central province of Isfahan, resulting in the tragic deaths of the pilot, co-pilot, and two merchants, as reported by state media. The crash in the city of Dorcheh sparked a fire that was swiftly extinguished by emergency responders.
