Police officials have identified Md Rakib as the individual shown in a viral video striking a woman with a stick at Dhaka University. Rakib, a student at the university’s Department of World Religions and Culture, is a suspect in a 2024 murder case in Kaliakair upazila of Gazipur, along with his twin brother, Shakib. The brothers have been evading authorities since the case was registered.
Khandkar Nasir Uddin, the Officer-in-Charge of Kaliakoir Police Station, disclosed that a charge sheet has been filed in connection with the murder of Sabbir Hossain in Safipur Paschimpara. Sabbir was found fatally injured outside Rakib and Shakib’s residence after a gym session with them and two other individuals. The case details indicate that Sabbir’s companions discovered him in a critical condition upon returning from a brief errand. The crime scene on the rooftop revealed bloodied weapons.
The victim’s brother, Md Mohiuddin Abir, who lodged the complaint, expressed frustration over the lack of progress in the case. Abir criticized the authorities for not taking action against the accused despite repeated complaints. He highlighted the transfer of the case to Gazipur Detective Police without justification and the absence of any issued arrest warrants.
In the recent viral video, Rakib was captured harassing two women, prompting one of them to cry out for justice after being struck. The incident has led to the formation of a three-member investigative panel by the Dhaka University administration.
Kaliakoir OC Nasir mentioned that the case falls under the jurisdiction of the DB Police, emphasizing their role in apprehending Rakib upon court-issued warrants. Meanwhile, OC Hasmat Ullah from Gazipur Detective Police acknowledged the lack of prior arrest operations due to various reasons but assured that necessary measures will now be taken to apprehend the suspects.
