Efforts to negotiate peace between the United States and Iran to end the Middle East conflict and fully reopen the critical strait have been inconclusive since the ceasefire began. President Trump, along with top security advisors, discussed an Iranian proposal after Tehran conveyed their terms to Washington through Pakistan. The proposal outlined Iran’s negotiation red lines including nuclear matters and the Strait of Hormuz, as reported by the Fars news agency.
White House spokeswoman, Karoline Leavitt, mentioned that the proposal is currently under discussion. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, speaking on Fox News, acknowledged that Iran’s proposal was more favorable than anticipated but questioned its authenticity. He emphasized the importance of any agreement ensuring Iran does not pursue nuclear weapons.
During a visit to Russia, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi blamed Washington for the breakdown of peace talks. He highlighted the excessive demands from the US as a reason for the previous negotiation round’s failure despite some progress. Araghchi had visited Oman and Pakistan, with hopes for further negotiations.
President Trump canceled a planned visit by his envoys, signaling a pause in talks. He stated that Iran could initiate further discussions if interested, clarifying that the cancellation did not imply a return to hostilities. Iran’s UN envoy emphasized the need for security guarantees from the US and Israel before offering assurances in the Gulf.
In Saint Petersburg, both President Putin and Araghchi reaffirmed their commitment to their countries’ strategic relationship following their meeting. Araghchi praised Iran’s strength during the conflict triggered by the US and Israel.
While economic repercussions of the US-Iranian ceasefire persist, with Iran blocking the Strait of Hormuz causing oil price spikes, individuals like photographer Shervin from Tehran are feeling the financial strain.
