A woman has been sentenced to death by a Dhaka court for her involvement in the Dhanmondi double murder case that occurred in 2019. The verdict was delivered by Judge Tauhida Akter of Dhaka Additional Metropolitan and Sessions Judge Court-7.
The condemned individual, Surovi Akter, was employed as a domestic worker by the deceased Afroza Begum. In addition to the death penalty, the court imposed a fine of Tk 50,000 on Surovi. Failure to pay the fine would result in an additional five months of rigorous imprisonment.
Furthermore, the court acquitted Bachhu Mia, who worked at the house, as the accusations against him could not be substantiated. The prosecution reported that the bodies of Afroza Begum, aged 65, and her housemaid Diti, aged 18, were discovered in a residence in Dhanmondi on November 1, 2019.
The incident led to the filing of a case at Dhanmondi Police Station on November 3, 2019. Subsequently, the police presented a charge sheet against Surovi and Bachhu Mia on February 1, 2022.
