French President Emmanuel Macron has cautioned Europe to prepare for increased instances of US animosity, advising that the recent “Greenland moment” should serve as a wake-up call for the continent to expedite long-overdue reforms aimed at bolstering its global influence.
In discussions with various European newspapers, Macron emphasized that the European Union should not interpret a temporary easing of tensions with the US as a permanent shift, despite a pause in American threats related to Greenland, trade, and technology.
Macron urged EU leaders to seize the opportunity presented at an upcoming summit in a Belgian castle to inject fresh momentum into economic reforms, enhancing the bloc’s competitiveness and fortifying its capacity to confront challenges posed by China and the US on the international platform.
Stressing the need for a different approach in the face of aggression, Macron stated, “When faced with clear acts of aggression, our response should not involve submission or seeking compromise. We have pursued that strategy for months to no avail.”
Macron accused the Trump administration of displaying overt hostility towards Europe and aiming for the EU’s fragmentation. He anticipated further strains with the US government, particularly concerning Europe’s oversight of digital technology.
Highlighting an anticipated clash over digital regulations, Macron cautioned, “It is certain that the US will challenge us in the upcoming months, particularly regarding digital regulations.” He warned of potential US tariffs if the EU utilizes its Digital Services Act to regulate tech firms.
Macron emphasized the need for Europe to enhance its resilience in light of the dual challenges posed by the US and China. “We are confronted with the Chinese trade tsunami and constant instability from the American side. These dual crises represent a significant shock—a rupture for Europeans,” he added.
