BuzzFeed Unveils AI-Driven Social Apps at SXSW

Date:

BuzzFeed, the prominent American digital media entity, has unveiled a range of innovative social applications driven by artificial intelligence (AI) in a strategic move to revamp its business model. The debut took place at the SXSW conference in Austin, Texas.

At the event, Jonah Peretti, the co-founder and CEO of BuzzFeed, showcased the new initiative as a pivotal step in adapting to the evolving media landscape. He introduced a fresh offshoot venture named Branch Office, which will concentrate on AI products catering to consumers by focusing on creativity and online engagement.

This development follows a series of AI experiments conducted by BuzzFeed over the past few years to incorporate cutting-edge technologies into its content and offerings. During the presentation, the company representatives showcased a lineup of novel applications aimed at boosting user interaction through AI-generated content and social connectivity.

Among the apps introduced was BF Island, a group chat platform integrated with AI-powered image editing tools. The application is coupled with a handpicked library of internet trends and memes to aid users in crafting content that mirrors the swiftly changing online culture.

Another app, Conjure, prompts users to capture daily photographs based on prompts generated by the app. Diverging from earlier social media platforms like BeReal, Conjure emphasizes abstract or thematic imagery over self-portraits. BuzzFeed officials highlighted the role of AI in influencing the user experience, including aspects guiding the app’s creative direction.

Additionally, BuzzFeed rolled out Quiz Party, a social app enabling collaborative participation in quizzes and the sharing of results with friends, leveraging one of the company’s long-standing content formats.

This announcement arrives amidst a challenging period for BuzzFeed, marked by recent indications of financial uncertainty and the exploration of strategic options to address liquidity concerns. With a reported net loss of $57.3 million last year, BuzzFeed has expressed its intent to prioritize investments in intellectual property development and AI-centric products.
