A recent FBI interview has brought into question President Donald Trump’s claim of being unaware of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein’s activities. Meanwhile, Trump’s commerce secretary, Howard Lutnick, faced a series of inquiries from lawmakers regarding his connections to the financier.
These developments highlight the ongoing political challenges stemming from the Epstein scandal for the Trump administration, even after the Justice Department released numerous Epstein-related documents in response to a bipartisan mandate.
The released files have also sparked international controversies by revealing new information about Epstein’s relationships with influential figures in politics, finance, business, and academia.
In July 2006, during the emergence of Epstein’s initial sex crime charges, the police chief of Palm Beach, Florida, reportedly received a call from Trump, as detailed in a 2019 FBI interview summary with the chief contained in the files.
According to the summary, Trump expressed gratitude for the police chief’s actions, stating that it was widely known that Epstein had been engaging in such behavior. Trump also cautioned the chief about Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s associate, describing her as “evil.” Additionally, Trump mentioned being in Epstein’s presence when teenagers were present and promptly leaving the situation.
The retired police chief, Michael Reiter, corroborated the FBI interview details to the Miami Herald in 2009.
