China’s FM Wang Yi Reassures EU at Munich Security Conference

Date:

China’s foreign minister reassured French and German officials during a gathering in Munich that Beijing was not responsible for the economic and security challenges facing Europe. Wang Yi emphasized the importance of enhanced collaboration between China and the European Union at the Munich Security Conference. In discussions with France’s Jean-Noel Barrot and Germany’s Johann Wadephul, Wang Yi positioned China as a trustworthy partner for the EU amid efforts by the bloc to diversify its partnerships away from both China and a less predictable United States.

“The development of China presents opportunities for Europe, and the challenges facing Europe are not attributable to China,” Wang Yi stated. He cautioned against the growing trends of unilateralism, protectionism, and power politics worldwide, urging Europe to adopt a rational and practical approach towards China.

Emphasizing that China and Europe are not adversaries but partners, Wang Yi highlighted that mutual dependence does not pose a risk, shared interests are not a threat, and collaborative efforts will not compromise security. The meeting occurred amidst trade tensions between the two economic powerhouses and disagreements over the EU’s concerns regarding China’s alleged support for Russia in the conflict with Ukraine.

The EU aims to reduce its reliance on China for critical resources like rare earth minerals while also addressing trade imbalances with the second-largest economy in the world.
