Gunmen on motorcycles launched a violent assault on three villages in central Nigeria, resulting in the deaths of at least 46 individuals, according to a source from a humanitarian organization as reported by AFP on Saturday.
This incident has once again brought attention to Nigeria’s struggle in addressing security challenges, which has been heavily criticized by US President Donald Trump.
According to a security report obtained by AFP, the assailants utilized a total of 41 motorcycles, with each carrying two or three individuals.
The targeted villages are located within the Borgu local government area in Niger State, close to the border with Kwara State, where a recent attack by jihadists resulted in the deaths of over 160 people.
The most brutal attack occurred in Konkoso village, where a minimum of 38 people were either shot or had their throats slit, as stated by the humanitarian source who requested anonymity when speaking to AFP.
The source mentioned that numerous homes in Konkoso were set on fire, and additional bodies are still being discovered beyond the confirmed casualties.
A resident of Konkoso recounted that the assailants initially targeted Tungar Makeri village before moving on to their village.
A spokesperson from the Niger State police informed AFP that six individuals lost their lives in Tungan Makeri during the attack that occurred around 6:00 am.
“Several houses were torched, and an unknown number of individuals were taken captive,” the police spokesperson mentioned, adding that investigations are underway concerning the attacks on the two other villages.
The Konkoso resident expressed that his nephew was among the victims in the tragic events that unfolded in Konkoso.
