Rare Al Samir, the CEO of Interactive Cares, a startup in Dhaka specializing in educational technology, along with his co-founder Jamila Bupasha Khushbu, was apprehended at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka as they allegedly attempted to flee the country amidst accusations of financial misconduct. The duo faced a formal complaint lodged by investors and former employees at the Adabor police station. Authorities from Adabor police station and immigration confirmed Al Samir’s detainment.
Established in 2020 by Rare Al Samir and Jamila Bupasha Khushbu, Interactive Cares saw rapid growth by offering career-oriented online courses during the pandemic. The platform’s approach integrated pre-recorded lessons, live sessions, and mentorship, focusing on enhancing job prospects. Its outreach primarily relied on social media to provide programs ranging from digital marketing to language exam preparation.
Interactive Cares attracted investments through a crowdfunding model, enabling individuals to invest with the expectation of returns. However, investors alleged that Al Samir failed to reimburse the invested capital, neglected profit distributions, and cut off communication with concerned parties.
Some investors estimated the outstanding debt to exceed Tk 10 crore, expressing concerns over potential money laundering activities. Staff members also disclosed delayed salary payments, leading some to contemplate legal recourse.
Al Samir refuted the allegations, asserting his commitment to repay all dues within a reasonable timeframe. Despite denying any involvement in money laundering, he acknowledged his detention by the authorities due to a purported misunderstanding.
While Interactive Cares secured investments from local and international sources, conflicting reports emerged regarding a $100,000 investment claimed to have been received in 2023 through the Accelerating Asia accelerator program. Accelerating Asia clarified that no formal investment transpired as the startup failed to meet the investment criteria.
As of now, Interactive Cares has not issued an official statement addressing the allegations.
