“Opposition Walkout Over ‘Anti-People’ Bills Passed”

Date:

The opposition members left the parliamentary session today, citing concerns over the approval of what they deemed as “anti-people” legislation despite their protests. Leader of the Opposition, Shafiqur Rahman, expressed disappointment that several bills they opposed were passed, leading to their decision to exit the session around 5:55 pm.

During their absence, the parliament endorsed 24 bills, confirming ordinances introduced by the interim government. Among these were the Supreme Court Judges Appointment (Repeal) Bill, 2026, the Supreme Court Secretariat (Repeal) Bill, 2026, and the National Human Rights Commission (Repeal and Reinstatement) Bill, 2026.

Additionally, the House approved various other bills, such as amendments to the National Sports Council, Bangabandhu Sports Welfare Foundation, Sheikh Hasina National Youth Development Institute, Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission, Public Procurement, Overseas Employment and Migration, Bangladesh Labour, Local Government (Union Parishad), and Legal Aid Services.

Further bills included amendments to the Jatiya Muktijhoddha Council, Land Use Control and Agricultural Land Protection, Bangladesh Telecommunication, Bangladesh Gas, Human Organ Transplantation, Foreign Donations (Voluntary Activities) Regulation, Prevention and Suppression of Human Trafficking and Smuggling of Migrants, and Forest and Tree Conservation.

Despite objections raised particularly against the Supreme Court-related bills and the National Human Rights Commission legislation, the opposition MPs re-entered the parliamentary session at approximately 6:55 pm.
