The High Court has granted approval for the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) elections to proceed on June 7. This decision comes after the court dismissed a writ petition challenging the legitimacy of the election timetable and voter registry for the upcoming BCB elections scheduled for June 7.
Justices Bhishmadev Chakrabortty and Md Ashif Hasan of the bench issued the rejection order, citing improper presentation of the petition before the court. Following the High Court’s ruling, BCB’s legal counsel, Barrister Mahin M Rahman, confirmed that there are no legal impediments to conducting the elections on June 7.
“This marks our fourth victory in thwarting legal attempts to halt the BCB elections,” Barrister Mahin M Rahman remarked. The writ petitioners, represented by Advocates Mohammod Hossain Lipu and Azim Uddin Patwary, sought a stay on the election process on June 7, arguing that the current election procedure does not adhere to the BCB Constitution’s provisions regarding council member nominations.
In response, BCB’s counsel, Mahin M Rahman, contended that Article 12.7 of the BCB Constitution mandates fresh nominations of General Council members before a new election can be held. He emphasized that the ongoing election process aligns with the Constitution’s requirements.
The BCB Election Commission had earlier announced the election schedule for the 2026 BCB Board of Directors on May 16, with June 7 designated as the voting day. Additionally, a draft voter list was published on May 17 as part of the election preparations.
The election process involves the direct election of 23 directors by the councillors, with two further directors to be nominated by the National Sports Council (NSC). Subsequently, the 25-member board will elect the BCB president from among themselves.
Attorney General Ruhul Quddus Kazal highlighted that representatives from the International Cricket Council (ICC) are currently in Bangladesh overseeing election-related activities. He cautioned that raising doubts about the election process at this stage could lead to confusion in the global cricket community.
