President Md Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman honored the martyrs of the Language Movement on Amar Ekushey and International Mother Language Day. The president laid a wreath at the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka at midnight as part of the official commemoration. Following him, Prime Minister Tarique placed a wreath at 12:06am.
Both leaders paid their respects in separate ceremonies, observing a moment of silence to commemorate the sacrifices made by those who fought for the recognition of Bangla as a state language. Tarique, along with his cabinet members and as the chairman of the BNP, also placed another wreath at the memorial. Later, at 12:16am, Tarique led the BNP standing committee members in paying tribute.
Additionally, Tarique, accompanied by his wife Zubaida Rahman and daughter Zaima Rahman, paid homage on behalf of the Zia family at 12:18am. Jamaat Ameer and opposition leader Shafiqur Rahman, representing the 11-party alliance, laid a wreath at 12:23am, with NCP leaders and other alliance members joining him.
The heads of the three armed services, Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral M Nazmul Hassan, and Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan, also paid their respects. Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin, foreign diplomats, invited guests, senior military and civil officials, and faculty members from Dhaka University were among those who participated in honoring the martyrs.
