Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman has voiced disappointment regarding the performance of the Bangladesh Law Commission, citing that substantial public funds have been utilized over the years with limited results.
During an event in Dhaka, the Minister highlighted that approximately Tk 150 crore of public resources have been expended on the commission in recent decades. Despite an annual allocation of Tk 8 to 10 crore, the outcomes have been minimal, with only eight out of 169 recommendations for legal reform being accepted by the government.
Moreover, he questioned the rationale behind retired senior judges seeking positions at the commission post-retirement, emphasizing the need for a transparent and regular legal process to address such issues.
The Minister also raised concerns about the enrollment examinations of the Bangladesh Bar Council, suggesting updates to accommodate candidates from English-medium backgrounds who face challenges. He urged the Bar Council leaders to review this matter promptly.
Additionally, Asaduzzaman cautioned against offering lucrative post-retirement roles to judges, as it could potentially compromise judicial integrity. He cited examples where such practices had raised integrity concerns within the judiciary and emphasized the importance of upholding institutional integrity.
Furthermore, the Minister shared an incident involving a retired senior judge who reportedly resumed legal practice and charged a substantial fee from a client without delivering the promised outcome. This case has been reported to the Supreme Court Bar for investigation.
