The former director general of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), Lt Gen (retd) Sheikh Mamun Khaled, was apprehended by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police in the early hours of Thursday. Additional Commissioner (DB) Shafiqul Islam confirmed that the arrest took place in Mirpur DOHS at approximately 1:15 am.
According to officials, Sheikh Mamun Khaled is implicated in a case filed with the International Crimes Tribunal. Defence sources allege that the ex-intelligence chief is facing various accusations, including the unlawful accumulation of wealth, engaging DGFI in political affairs, and orchestrating contentious “militant drama” scenarios. He is also accused of misappropriating significant funds from the Jolshiri Housing Project and having connections with the “Aynaghor” scandal.
Sources claim that during Sheikh Hasina’s administration, Khaled utilized the influence of Sajeeb Wazed Joy to amass illicit riches. Nevertheless, no official statement substantiating these claims has been released by the authorities. The police have stated that further investigations are underway regarding this matter.
