Israel has greenlit a substantial agreement on Sunday to procure two combat squadrons of fighter jets from the United States, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized that it would boost the nation’s air dominance. The acquisition involves a squadron of F-35 multi-role stealth fighters from Lockheed Martin and another squadron of F-15IA warplanes from Boeing, as stated by Israel’s defense ministry.
The objective of this initiative, according to Defense Minister Israel Katz, is to secure Israel’s aerial supremacy for the foreseeable future. Katz highlighted that the procurement of F-35 and F-15IA jets is pivotal to the ‘Shield of Israel’ strategy, which is aimed at providing the Israeli military with a sustained qualitative advantage.
The F-35, a cutting-edge military aircraft developed through a collaborative effort between the United States and various allies, is renowned for its advanced capabilities. Israel currently operates multiple F-35 jets.
Netanyahu expressed that this move would enhance Israel’s significant air dominance while affirming the country’s commitment to developing its own weaponry and fighter planes. He indicated plans to inject an additional 350 billion shekels ($118 billion) into the defense budget over the next ten years to promote domestic arms production and reduce reliance on external suppliers.
Furthermore, Netanyahu highlighted the intention to innovate ‘blue-and-white’ revolutionary aircraft, signifying products originating from Israel, to revolutionize the defense landscape. Israel’s air force played a crucial role in the Gaza conflict, executing a vigorous aerial bombing campaign targeting Hamas infrastructure, including tunnels and rocket launch sites.
Amid ongoing conflicts with Iran and Hezbollah, Israel has ramped up its defense spending. The approval of the 2026 budget includes a substantial increase in military expenditures. The escalation in military outlays began following Hamas’s attack on Israel in October 2023, leading to a surge in military investments and enhancements in the nation’s defense capabilities.
