Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon resulted in the deaths of at least five individuals today, as per reports from Lebanese state media. Simultaneously, Hezbollah militants asserted that they had initiated a fresh series of attacks on Israel.
In a separate development, the Israeli military disclosed the demise of a soldier during clashes in southern Lebanon, bringing the total count of troops killed to three since Hezbollah instigated hostilities with Israel.
Hezbollah commenced launching rockets into Israel on March 2 in retaliation for the assassination of Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who is a key supporter of the militant group.
Israel responded with a sustained bombardment campaign primarily targeting areas historically controlled by Hezbollah, alongside sending ground forces across the border to establish a buffer zone by reoccupying portions of southern Lebanon.
The National News Agency of Lebanon reported that a strike on a building in the Nabatieh region of southern Lebanon claimed the lives of two individuals. Visuals from AFP depicted a severely damaged structure with smoke billowing from the debris, as emergency responders and firefighters engaged at the site.
Another strike in the border locality of Bint Jbeil led to the deaths of three more individuals, according to the agency.
Yesterday, Lebanon’s health ministry announced that Israeli airstrikes had resulted in the fatalities of 1,094 individuals since the conflict commenced, including 121 children, while over 3,000 others sustained injuries.
Mass evacuations have been initiated in various parts of Lebanon, with over a million residents fleeing their residences due to safety alerts.
The Israeli military stated today that it had eliminated 700 Hezbollah combatants since the conflict started, though the group has not disclosed its own casualty figures.
As Israel intensifies its efforts to dismantle Hezbollah, the militants declared a fresh series of assaults against Israeli targets. They claimed to have struck a defense ministry complex in Tel Aviv and other military installations in northern Israel.
Moreover, Hezbollah stated that they had launched rockets in Khiam, a location marked by fierce confrontations between Israeli forces and the militant organization.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared yesterday that the expansion of a “buffer zone” in southern Lebanon was underway, emphasizing that neutralizing Hezbollah remained a pivotal objective for Israel in the region.
During a visit to Beirut, Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty announced the provision of 1,000 tons of humanitarian aid while urging an immediate halt to what he termed Israel’s “aggression”.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres echoed the call for an end to the conflict, emphasizing the need for Hezbollah to cease attacks on Israel and for Israel to halt military operations impacting civilians severely.
Yesterday, Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem asserted that engaging in negotiations with Israel amidst ongoing hostilities would equate to surrender. He also urged Lebanese authorities to reconsider their decision to criminalize the military activities of his group.
Hezbollah and its Shia Muslim ally Amal criticized the government’s move to declare Iran’s ambassador persona non grata, with affiliated movements advocating for a support rally for the envoy later in the day.
