The National Citizen Party (NCP) spokesperson, Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, expressed concerns today, labeling the government’s actions as “risky and self-destructive.” Speaking at a press briefing held at the NCP central office in Banglamotor, Dhaka, this evening, he emphasized the urgent need for public-interest and accountability-related ordinances to be formalized as laws before April 10. Asif indicated that failure to do so could result in the initiation of another movement.
Highlighting the party’s proactive stance, Asif mentioned that a comprehensive position paper on the ordinances targeted for repeal by a parliamentary committee is in the works. Once finalized, the position paper will be submitted to pertinent authorities, the speaker, and members of parliament.
Asif alleged a discernible pattern in the government’s actions, stating, “There is a noticeable trend where ordinances empowering the prime minister and the executive branch are being retained, while those promoting accountability are being revoked.”
Furthermore, Asif pointed out a shift in the stance of advisers in the interim government, noting that while they had previously advocated for privacy protection, the right to information, independent institutions, and citizen security, they are now notably silent on these matters.
