Opposition Leader Announces Street Demonstrations

Date:

Opposition Leader Shafiqur Rahman declared plans to initiate public street demonstrations following a walkout from parliament due to the failure to reach a resolution on a motion for the establishment of the Constitution Reform Council. In an evening briefing post-walkout, he mentioned that the protest strategy would be finalized in collaboration with other parties within the Jamaat-led alliance.

At approximately 5:40 pm, subsequent to the question-answer segment in the House, Shafiqur addressed the floor on a point of order and announced the walkout, leading opposition legislators to exit the parliamentary chamber.

The opposition contended that no decision had been made on their adjournment motion regarding the Constitution Reform Council. Shafiqur accused the government of attempting to stifle their proposal by introducing a similar notice on the same matter.

Expressing dismay, Shafiqur stated, “This is the first instance where despite joint support from both government and opposition, the people’s mandate has been ignored, rejected, and terminated.” He emphasized the significance of resolving issues within the House, noting it would have been well-received by the public.

Shafiqur emphasized the necessity to return to the people since their will was not duly acknowledged within the parliamentary setting. He criticized the hindrance of the people’s desire for reform and a transformation in the country’s political landscape, characterizing it as a setback for the nation and the parliament.

The 11-party alliance, as per Shafiqur, will convene shortly to determine their subsequent actions and communicate their decisions to the media promptly.
