Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has expressed satisfaction with the government’s recent announcement to forego duty-free cars and government plots, hailing it as a timely and promising decision. Emphasizing the importance of transparency, TIB has urged all parliament members and government officials to disclose their financial information, including income, expenses, and assets, online annually.
In a released statement, TIB highlighted that this move signifies a significant shift towards eradicating longstanding authoritarian and discriminatory practices within the government’s operations. The organization has called upon the government to develop a comprehensive national anti-corruption strategy, drawing on various reform frameworks such as the BNP’s 31-point plan, election manifesto, July Charter, and the Anti-Corruption Commission Reform Report.
Iftekharuzzaman, the Executive Director of TIB, underscored that the primary objective of recent political movements and national elections was to establish a governance system in Bangladesh that prioritizes public welfare, accountability, and integrity. Stressing the pivotal role of corruption prevention, he noted that effective measures are essential for the successful implementation of political, economic, social, and cultural commitments to the citizens.
He cautioned that inadequate anti-corruption safeguards could escalate risks in development initiatives and public procurement processes, leading to issues like power abuse, conflicts of interest, partisan interference, extortion, land encroachment, bribery, tax evasion, and money laundering. Iftekharuzzaman further advocated for the mandatory disclosure of assets by elected officials and their relatives within three months of assuming office, as outlined in the July Charter, extending this requirement to all state-paid employees.
Describing the rejection of duty-free privileges as a positive initial stride towards fostering fair governance, he remarked that this decision has heightened public hopes for enhanced transparency and accountability in the government’s operations. He expressed optimism that the anti-corruption commitments outlined in the BNP’s reform agenda and electoral promises would be effectively put into action.
TIB also urged for constitutional amendments to prevent power misuse and stressed the involvement of political parties, governmental and non-governmental bodies, and citizens in a collaborative effort to combat corruption on a national scale.
