“Bangladesh Urged to Consider National Media Freedom Index”

Date:

Concerns regarding media freedom have long been a topic of discussion in Bangladesh, attracting criticism and international scrutiny. Bangladesh’s position in global rankings, such as the latest World Press Freedom Index where it ranks 152nd out of 180 countries, has repeatedly drawn attention. While such rankings play a crucial role in shaping a country’s international reputation and influencing diplomatic relations, they may not always reflect the true situation within a country. This discrepancy underscores the need for Bangladesh to consider establishing a national media freedom index tailored to its unique circumstances, challenges, institutions, and populace.

The Media Reform Commission’s 2025 report emphasized key challenges faced by the press in Bangladesh. It highlighted that the crisis concerning media freedom in the country cannot be attributed to a single factor, censorship, or legal abuse alone. The report underlined that the interplay among the government, media, and citizens is at the heart of this crisis.

Media freedom is not solely about the relationship between the government and journalism; it is a multifaceted issue. A lack of independence in the media can result from government interference, while a failure to uphold ethical standards and public interest can undermine the media’s credibility, even in a free society. Additionally, citizen engagement in verifying information, combatting rumors, fostering trust, and promoting democratic discourse is vital for a robust public sphere and sustained media freedom.

To uphold media freedom effectively, a collaborative effort among the government, media outlets, and citizens is essential. The government should ensure a clear distinction between protecting and controlling the media, uphold constitutional safeguards, implement the Right to Information Act (RTIA) effectively, ensure transparency in licensing and accreditation processes, and safeguard journalists’ safety. Moreover, addressing issues such as licensing restrictions, advertisement influence, and political affiliations that affect media ownership and content is crucial.

Citizens play a pivotal role in sustaining media freedom by actively engaging with information, promoting media literacy, participating in policy discussions, and supporting independent journalism while combatting misinformation and fostering a culture of democratic participation.

The introduction of a Bangladesh-specific media freedom index offers several benefits. It provides a more nuanced understanding of the country’s media landscape, enables accountability through data-driven assessments, and facilitates comprehensive reforms by analyzing the interconnected aspects of media freedom.

In conclusion, as Bangladesh navigates the complexities of media freedom, the establishment of a national media freedom index can serve as a valuable tool for fostering informed discussions, promoting transparency, and advancing governance reforms in line with international standards.
