Bangladesh’s temporary government has recently finalized a series of defense agreements with foreign nations, which, while strategically crucial, have raised concerns among security experts due to the timing of these deals. Analysts emphasize the urgent need for modernizing the country’s defense capabilities to establish a more robust deterrence system. However, they argue that such significant procurements have lasting strategic and diplomatic implications, suggesting that ideally, elected administrations should oversee such agreements.
In the past two months, Bangladesh has inked at least five defense-related deals encompassing purchases, production, and technology transfer. Notably, on December 9, the Bangladesh Air Force and the Italian multinational company Leonardo S.p.A signed a Letter of Intent for the procurement of Eurofighter Typhoon fighter aircraft. Subsequently, agreements were reached with China for a drone manufacturing plant, Japan for defense equipment transfer, and the UK for acquiring HMS Enterprise.
Furthermore, discussions have advanced with Turkey for acquiring the SIPER air defense system and with Pakistan for purchasing JF-17 Thunder fighter jets. Additionally, plans are underway to establish a defense industrial zone in Chattogram to enhance domestic defense capabilities and tap into the global defense production market.
Experts, including Mohammad Ashique Rahman and Air Cdre (Retd) Ishfaq Ilahi Choudhury, stress the importance of enhancing Bangladesh’s defense capabilities through advanced technologies. While acknowledging the necessity of defense improvements, they question the timing of these agreements under an interim government, emphasizing the significance of considering the long-term implications on foreign relations, economic factors, and alignment of defense technologies.
Foreign Adviser Touhid Hossain has clarified that these agreements aim to facilitate the incoming government rather than burden it. Stressing the meticulous planning and negotiation involved in these deals, he highlighted the efforts made to ensure favorable terms for Bangladesh’s defense and trade interests.
