“Malaysia Urges TB Precautions in Ramadan Gatherings”

Date:

During the holy month of Ramadan, Malaysians are actively participating in bazaars and breaking fast gatherings. The Health Ministry emphasizes the importance of tuberculosis (TB) precautions in crowded and enclosed settings.

According to the Health Ministry’s recent statement, the country reported 596 new TB cases in the sixth epidemiological week, bringing the total number of cases to 3,161 nationwide.

The ministry highlighted that crowded and poorly ventilated spaces pose a higher risk of TB transmission, especially in the presence of untreated active TB cases. While Ramadan itself does not cause TB transmission, the increased social interactions during the month can elevate exposure risks.

Emphasizing community awareness and proactive measures, the ministry underscores the significance of early detection, effective treatment, and prevention of TB spread through collective efforts.

Compared to faster-spreading diseases like influenza or Covid-19, TB spreads slowly and typically requires prolonged and repeated exposure. To mitigate risks, the public is advised to practice proper cough etiquette, maintain good indoor ventilation, wear masks in crowded areas or when symptomatic, and seek medical attention for persistent coughs lasting over two weeks or other TB-related symptoms.

The distribution of TB cases across regions reveals Sabah with the highest count of 755 cases, followed by Selangor (596), and Sarawak (332). Johor ranks next with 280 cases, while Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya collectively reported 244 cases. Other regions with notable cases include Kedah (181), Penang (172), Perak (154), Kelantan (121), Pahang (103), Terengganu (74), Negeri Sembilan (62), Melaka (48), Perlis (21), and Labuan with the lowest count of 18 cases.
