“US and Iran Set for Further Talks after Positive Discussions”

Date:

US President Donald Trump has stated that the United States had productive discussions regarding Iran following an indirect dialogue in Oman. Both sides have agreed to engage in further negotiations next week. Iran, on the other hand, expressed optimism about future talks with the US, highlighting a positive atmosphere during the recent discussions in Oman.

During the talks in Muscat, facilitated by Oman, US and Iranian delegations did not have a face-to-face meeting but engaged in discussions. Trump mentioned to reporters aboard Air Force One that talks on Iran were positive and that another meeting is scheduled for early next week.

Additionally, Trump signed an executive order authorizing his administration to impose tariffs on goods from countries engaging in business with Iran. This move could impact trade with nations such as China, Germany, and the United Arab Emirates. The purpose of these actions in relation to the talks remains unclear.

The discussions marked the first formal interaction between the US and Iran since the US supported Israel in its conflict with Iran in June. While Iran cautioned against further threats following hints of potential military action from Washington, Trump emphasized the consequences if a deal is not reached.

The talks in Muscat primarily focused on Iran’s nuclear program, an issue where Western nations suspect Iran’s intentions of developing nuclear weapons, which Iran denies, claiming its program is peaceful. The US delegation, led by Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, sought to address additional concerns such as Tehran’s support for militant groups, its ballistic missile program, and treatment of protestors.

Both sides expressed a willingness to continue negotiations, with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi highlighting the positive atmosphere during the talks. Araghchi urged Washington to avoid threats and pressure for the talks to progress smoothly.

Admiral Brad Cooper from US Central Command was reportedly present at the discussions in Oman. Multiple sessions throughout the day involved shuttle diplomacy between the delegations. The talks received support from allies like Qatar, who hoped for a comprehensive agreement benefiting both parties and promoting regional security and stability.

The White House’s objective in the talks is to limit Iran’s nuclear capabilities, a goal that has been a point of contention between the two nations. France’s Foreign Minister emphasized the need for Iran to cease being a destabilizing force, citing its nuclear activities and support for various groups in the region.

Trump’s recent focus has shifted towards addressing Iran’s nuclear program, and the US has deployed a naval group led by the USS Abraham Lincoln to the region. Iran has warned of retaliatory measures against US bases if provoked. The US has also implemented new sanctions to restrict Iran’s oil exports, aligning with its strategy to exert maximum pressure on the Iranian regime.
